Stained glass behind the apse - 3/9/2009 Print E-mail

Six stained glass windows are behind the apse along the ambulatory.  These windows depict two saints from three distinct religious orders and are placed in chronological order as you ascend the ambulatory (from right to left).  

  • Saint Benedict, the Founder of the Benedictine Order and Western Monasticism, along with his sister Saint Scholastica
  • Saint Dominic, Founder of the Dominican Order, and Saint Catherine of Siena
  • Reformers of the Carmelite Order, Saint John of the Cross, and his soul sister, Saint Teresa of Avila

BENEDICTINE ORDER

Saint Benedict. 
 Founder of western monasticism, born at Nursia, c. 480; died at Monte Cassino, 543. Click here for a biographical sketch.

Saint Scholastica.

DOMINICAN ORDER

Saint Dominic.
 Founder of the Order of Preachers, commonly known as the Dominican Order; born at Calaroga, in Old Castile, c. 1170; died 6 August, 1221. Click here for a biographical sketch.

CARMELITE ORDER

Saint John of the Cross.
