Our tower has three bells hung and programmed to strike the hour and call us to Mass, peel at weddings, and somberly toll at funerals (upon request). That said, we are good neighbors so the bells strike at nine in the morning, noon, and six o'clock in the evening. They were forged at St. Louis, MO, in 1894. They were originally made for St. Peter's Lutheran Parish and are inscribed in German, "Glory to God in the highest. This is a gift of the young people of...St. Peter's Parish."
Since we have started ringing bells we have received comments pro and con, but one sent to us affirms our practice, "I just wanted to let you know how wonderful it was to hear your chimes/bells this morning as I was having my coffee on my screened porch. It took me back to my childhood and also a trip to Europe some years ago. Maybe we need to hear them regularly to remind us to slow down and be thankful that we still have the freedom to worship our Lord. Thanks for such a reminder and I hope to hear them again....often!"
